About Fat Rights and NAAFA
Founded in 1969, the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) is a non‑profit fat‑rights organization dedicated to protecting the rights and improving the quality of life for fat people around the world. To read more about the organization’s roots and the broader fat liberation movement, visit their official history page here.
Our Mission
The mission of NAAFA is to transform how society perceives fat bodies and to end size‑based discrimination through advocacy, education, and community support.
Our Vision
NAAFA envisions a culture in which all fat people are free, respected, and fully liberated from every form of oppression linked to body size.
Our Approach
Fat people exist within every marginalized identity, and NAAFA works for liberation across this full spectrum. Through education, policy advocacy, and direct support, the organization pushes for meaningful changes in systems and practices that affect fat people’s everyday lives.
Intersectionality
All fat people face weight stigma, but those who also belong to other marginalized groups are hit hardest by anti‑fatness, on top of existing bias and oppression. To learn more about how NAAFA understands and applies intersectionality, see their materials here.
